Armed Forces Golden Hellos and Special Pay

Armed Forces Golden Hellos and Special Pay

HMForces.co.uk

There are a number of different bonuses available for specific roles within the Armed Forces.

These are due to simple supply and demand issues, the MoD have to fill key roles and if there are not sufficient numbers coming into the Service interested in those roles they are forced to offer extra incentives.

A Golden Hello is usually used to entice candidates with specific skills or qualifications. They can also be used for roles that have potentially negative associations, such as submariners who spend a large proportion of their time in the confined space of a submarine.

A Financial Retention Incentive (FRI) is usually used when a role requires an extended training time. In this case a new recruit receives their extra pay when they have served a set period of time to encourage people to stay longer in those roles. If you are just joining, and the FRI is a major incentive for joining a particular trade or role, make sure that it will still be available when you have served the set period of time. For example, if you need to serve for four years and the current scheme ends in 2011 you will not be eligible for the current scheme. Of course, it may be extended or improved in the future, but there is no guarantee of this.

The Golden Hellos and FRI’s for each Service are outlined in the following sections:

1. British Army Pay Incentives

2. RAF Pay Incentives

3. Royal Navy Pay Incentives

4. Royal Marines Pay Incentives

Special Pay reflects that some roles such as pilots and submariners are using their skill sets to the full during their day to day activities, while other roles spend more time training and preparing for when they will use their specific skills in battle. While we make every effort to keep this information as complete and up to date as possible, you should always check this information with your recruiter and not assume that you will be eligible for monetary incentives until they confirm it. This is covered in more detail in the next section.

See the Defecne Internal Brief as some of these Golden Hellos have been dropped and there's a Public sector pay freeze at the moment: http://www.nff.org.uk/pdfdocs/afprb_report_dib_march2011_2.pdf

Unfortunately there isnt a lot he can do if his appeal has been denied. His best bet is to see his CO, plead his case and hope that he will apply some pressure to get him fast-tracked back to his unit. This shouldnt be a problem, his unit wont want to lose someone with his experience. Probably not the answer you were hoping for, sorry!

Glad to be of help - the small print is a mindfield and one that is easily missed when signing on the dotted line.

Extremely helpful. I have an ongoing dispute with the army at the moment regarding signing off. I had a golden hello and they are trying to say i must do an extra year because of it. I can now clearly state this applies to FRIs which i never had, so somebody in admin needs to brush up on their knowledge before others are trapped without cause. Many thanks.
