Kelly Holmes, famous for winning gold medals in the 800m and 1500m in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games served and trained in the Army for nine years.

She was originally inspired by Sebastian Coe and was a middle distance runner when she was a teenager.

In the Army, she was a lorry driver in the Women’s Royal Army Corps (WRAC), later becoming a basic physical training instructor (PTI).

In the 1990’s Holmes was then transferred to the Adjutant General’s Corps as a physical trainer where she reached the rank of sergeant.

She was an Army judo champion and alledgedly used to compete in the men’s races for the Army athletics as there was no competition from other women.

Kelly Holmes was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2005 and is now very much a public figure, involved in supporting youth sports in local communites and other organistations.
