Royal Family Members

There have been many veterans that became famous after they had served, in fact all fall into this category. Yet still, we can count them as famous veterans! Generally the public are not aware of service or of famous veterans so we have compiled a small list of the ones we found.

However there are actual people who are famous prior to their service and therefore are famous veterans. These tend to be members of the Royal Family. They have traditionally served in the Armed Forces, especially those in line, as it tended to train them in decision making should the country go to war.

The Queen became the first royal female to be a full-time active member of the Armed Services in 1945 when she joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service when she was still Princess Elizabeth.

Prince Harry is the latest Royal Family member to see active service when he served in Afghanistan in early 2008. He was the Commander of the Tactical Air Control Party (TACP), that involved being in charge of the Household Cavalry Regiment Battlegroup’s Forward Air Controllers. This group are responsible for re-suppling the Battlegroup by air, aerial surveillance of the area and controlling aircraft onto their targets.

However, his brother Prince William has also been active in the military recently, having graduated from Sandhurst as an officer of the Household Cavalry’s Blues and Royals in 2006, before getting his RAF pilot wings and serving on board the frigate HMS Iron Duke in 2008.

Prior to this Prince Andrew was the last Royal Family member to see active service when he was involved in the Falklands campaign in 1982, flying SeaKing helicopters on anti-submarine and transport duties.

The Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles both served in the Royal Navy, with Prince Charles also training to be a pilot in the RAF. Prince William is currently a helicopter pilot with the Search and Rescue Force and both Prince William and Prince Harry graduated as Army Officers from Sandhurst.
