RAF Squadrons (Numbers 20-29)

20 (Reserve) Squadron No. 20 Squadron was formed in 1915 at Netheravon in Wiltshire from No. 7 Reserve Squadron. It is currently an Operational Conversion Unit Squadron (Reserve) flying Harriers and is based at RAF Wittering in Cambridgeshire.

22 Squadron No. 22 Squadron was formed in 1915 at Fort Grange in Gosport and flew FE2B two-seat pusher biplanes in France. It is now a search and rescue unit, based at RAF St Mawgan, but flying SeaKings at Chivenor, Wattisham and Valley.

23 Squadron No. 23 Squadron was formed in 1915 at Fort Grange in Surrey. It is currently an Air Defence and Airbourne Early warning Squadron flying E-3D Sentry aircraft and is based at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire. Together with No. 8 Squadron it provides the UK’s contribution to the NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Force.

24 Squadron No. 24 Squadron was formed in 1915 at Hounslow in West London. It is currently an Air Transport and Air-to-Air refueling squadron flying Hercules C4/C45 and is based at RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire.

25 Squadron No. 25 Squadron was formed in 1915 at Montrose in Scotland from the personnel of No. 6 Reserve Squadron. It is currently an Air Defence and Airbourne Early warning Squadron flying Tornado F3’s and is based at RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire.

27 Squadron No. 27 Squadron was formed in 1915 at Hounslow from the personnel of No. 24 Squadron. It is currently a Support Helicopter Squadron flying Chinook HC2s at RAF Odiham in Hampshire.

28 Squadron No. 28 Squadron was formed in 1915 at Gosport in Hampshire from the personnel of No. 22 Squadron. It is currently a Support Helicopter Squadron flying Merlin HC3s at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire.

29(Reserve) Squadron No. 29 Squadron was formed in 1915 at Gosport in Hampshire from members supplied by No. 23 Squadron. It is currently an Operational Conversion Unit Squadron (Reserve) flying Typhoons and is based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.
