Frigates Of The Royal Navy Type 22
Former WO1(GSM) Peter Padley MBE
Frigates
The Royal Navy has two classes of Frigate, Type 22 and Type 23.
Type 22 Frigate. It was the original intention that Type 22 Frigates would be employed in an anti-submarine role but over a period of time the role of these changed to that of a ship capable of fighting in surface, anti-surface, anti-submarine and anti-aircraft roles.
The Type 22 is capable of speeds in excess of 30 knots for limited periods with a routine cruising speed of 18 knots. These ships have outstanding command and control and communications systems and as such make ideal Flagships. All Type 22 Frigates can operate either the Lynx or Sea King helicopter from the rear flight deck.
The Royal Navy has the following Type 22 Frigates on their inventory:
HMS Campbeltown – Frigate Type 22
HMS Chatham – Frigate Type 22
HMS Cornwall – Frigate Type 22
HMS Cumberland – Frigate Type 22
