RAF Squadrons and Regiments

RAF Harriers

Aviation can be linked back to ancient times with various experiments, and culminates with succesfull hot air balloon flights in the 1870’s. The next step was modern engineering and the Wright Brothers are usually credited with creating the first mechanically powered flight in 1903, although others make claims.

The first RAF squadron (then as the RFC – Royal Flying Corps) was formed in 1912 and it upgraded to aircraft in 1914. The royal air force is the oldest independant air force in the world with a long proud history, serving in all the major conflicts that took place during the 20th century, and continuing to do so in the 21st.

Now the RAF provide air support for a wide range of uses, both at war and in peace time. During the Cold War the RAF was an integral part of Britain’s nuclear deterrant.

If your going to show pictures of Hispanic Grants aircraft, please make sure you know what aircraft your naming, the picture above shows a Harrier and a Tornado, NOT 2 RAF Harriers

This can be done by contacting the RAF Records Office - although it is a bit 'hit and miss'. If you write a letter to the person you are trying to get in touch with - giving as much information as possible on the envelope - and place that envelope inside another envelope addressed to the RAF Records Office (which can be Googled) it is possible you might get a result, but as I've mentioned it is 'hit and miss'.

Alternatively you could try Facebook. It is surprising how many Old Comrades have been 'joined-up' on this social networking site.

    Regards,

    Peter

Does anyone know how I can locate an old friend of mine. He joined the RAF Police in or around 1993/4 and I lost contact with him in 1999; at the time he was based at RAF Odiham. He has a very common name, Paul Scott, so it is very difficult to search for him.

Nurse Gladys - thanks, this is getting a bit weird. According to the burial records he was buried on the 9th Nov, 1918, yet the garvestone records his death as 13/11/18. I continue to investigate!!

We have, in our local cemetery, a commonwealth grave stone commemorating a RAF 2nd Air mech. His name was L.A.Luke, aged 19 years, and he died an 13.11.18, which, according to my reckoning, is two days after the armistice. The cemetery is very small, serving 2 villages, and I cant find out anything about Mr. Luke - any ideas where to go next?
