This one is as hard as steel. You always need one of these wether it's for the outdoors in general or if you've a large garden (which I have), in which case I get foxes coming and messing things up. Also its length is excellant for deterring nutcases from coming near you if you do find a reprobate in your back garden. In addition, the L.E.D bulb is very bright.

Well, Maglite's were absolutely great in their day, however, since the turn of the 21st century, even keyring torches have become brighter than the 4D maglite's (even the LED one's).
It is no good buying these cheap torches when the alternates out there are 100's of times brighter, have much longer battery life, are more reliable and are smaller and less cumbersome.
I personally carry a Fenix PD20, it's tiny and offers far more power and battery life than these massive maglite's, I also have larger one's for greater output, range and run time.
Even if your using a maglite primarily as a weapon, there are still torches much better which are a similar size and weight.
