Posted over 2 years ago Hi everyone i'm currently joining the royal marines not a cadet yet as my profile says but thinking about it was a massive understatement even if it kills me i'ill put that green beret on and wear it with pride. Sorry for the blab lol. Now to my problem i've been searching on a few websites to find out more about the different brigades in the RM's and have got a bit stuck with 539 Assault Squadron, One site says this name is correct but dosen't go into what it consistes of or even dose and another comes up with 1 Assault Group Royal Marines. If anyone could shed some light on this matter for me i would be most greatfull. cheers Harley |

| Posted over 2 years ago See the below mate, you need to do a course called an LC (landing craft) course, you can do this as a marine or a cpl539 Assault Squadron Royal Marines![]() 539 Assault Squadron539 Asslt Sqn RM was formed on 2 April 1984 and commissioned operational on 24 July 1984, giving 3 Commando Brigade an integral amphibious movement capability. This was in direct response to lessons learned during the Falklands Conflict in 1982. Today the Sqn consists of over 100 personnel and is equipped with a variety of Landing Craft including Hovercraft (LCAC), Rigid Raiding craft (RRC), Inflatable raiding craft (IRC) and Landing Craft Vehicle/Personnel. The Sqn is based in Turnchapel on the outskirts of Plymouth, Devon. 539 Asslt Sqn is named after 539 Assault Flotilla which landed on D-Day as part of assault group two onto Gold beach. During the landing Cpl George Tandy (aged 19) was the coxswain of LCA 786 which had lost its steering wheel, so he stood on the rudder with water up to his waist and guided his craft into the beach, under fire for seven miles to land his troops. He was subsequently awarded the Distinguished Service Medal (DSM). During the Falklands campaign the Sqn was formed for the duration of the operation, carrying out operations to support advance forces, the main formation landings and numerous covert landings of SBS and SAS troops. Most notably the Sqn was pivotal for the amphibious part of the push forward to Bluff Cove. The Sqn continues to flourish today. It has undertaken no less than 8 operations since in recent years ranging from flood relief in Bangladesh through to evacuation of expatriates from Kinshasa in former Zaire. This is in addition to the supporting the very high tempo of exercises and deployments within 3 Cdo Bde RM with a variety of boat groups and coxswains. |

| Posted over 2 years ago im guessing you havent got the info pack on the marines yet as it explains the different brigades this what it says : At the heart of todays royal marines is 3 commando Brigade. this is made up of a wide variety of royal marines and other units , spearheaded by three commando units each at nearly 700 men strong... 40 commando royal marines, 42 commando and 45 commando. what i have found out other than that info is a couple of other units which they dont talk about in too much depth that hold marines.. everyone knows the SBS and F company which is part of the SFSG (special forces support group) both are concidered special forces and both have selection of some kind.
but the 3 main are 40, 42 and 45 |

Get the impression she don't like you, even though i gather she don't know well enough to speak about you!!! Life is too short to wake up with regrets. So love the people who treat you right. Forget about the ones who don't. |

| Posted about 1 year ago Getting back on topic, 539 Assault Sqn often work closely with SB and SFSG, hence the general lack of info. As previously stated, you will first need to complete training and then put your chit in for an LCs course.
I don't know how things are run these days but in my time you had to complete an options list towards the end of training (around week 28). We were given a list of TQs/SQs that needed to be filled (eg x amountof clerks, x amount of chefs, x amount of sigs etc.). If the list wasn't filled with "volunteers" the training team would fill it for us (they had a quota to fulfil).
You may well find that, due to the nature of LC ratings, you will need to meet certain criteria before you are even allowed to apply. Once a Marine, always a Marine |

| Posted about 1 year ago Yes, that 's why it says so on the RN site. This comes up many times. I'm guessing it's mainly to do with background checks, medical info etc etc. Not easy to get from foreign countries I'd imagine? |

I know it sounds ancient and a lifetime away....but trust me...it's not! And if you really want in...then it will be worth the wait! I'm no expert but I've never seen it anywhere that there is any way round it. And if you want in at Officer level...you'll probably need as much education and life experience as you can get. But as I said, I'm definitely NO expert................... |
