Hi leon1989 and welcome.

This is from the RN website , its all I could find, hope it helps!

  • If you are awaiting a court appearance, in any other capacity other than as a witness, you may not be eligible to apply until the outcome of the hearing is known. Please check with your Armed Forces Careers Office

  • Spent and unspent convictions (including prison, young offenders institution or probation) for certain types of offence may mean that you are ineligible to apply for entry into certain branches or trades within the Armed Forces. If you have any doubts about which branches or trades fall into the above categories, please seek advice

  • Ex-Servicemen or Servicewomen discharged for disciplinary reasons will be ineligible to re-enter

I have heard this before with the 5 years wait, its to see if you re-offend. I doubt it very much that it can be overturned, not unless you are suddenly found not guilty! Sorry!

OK what regiment were you in if you don't mind me asking? well a don't no much about the army. I was looking to be an Aircraft engineer technician. Can you pursue this career in the army?

I was a Vehicle Mechanic in the REME.

Aircraft Technicians are also to be found in the REME.

This is the Entrance Criteria with regards to Criminal Convictions:

When joining the Army you are required to give details of any civil convictions you have which are considered 'unspent' under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

You are, for the most part, entitled to withhold details about those convictions considered 'spent', however, there are exceptions to this under the Act.

If you are interested in employment in the Army Medical Services, as an administrator with the Adjutant General's Corps or other designated sensitive employments, you will be required to declare all 'spent' convictions.

The idea is to give those who have been convicted of offences a chance to live them down. This means that if a certain period of time has passed since you were convicted, you can fill in your application as if the offence, conviction and sentence had never taken place.

In the case of the exceptions to the Act mentioned above, it is important for us to have a full understanding of your background if you are going to work with children and vulnerable adults as well as working with sensitive information.

Be honest with us about your past. Remember, past convictions, 'spent' or 'unspent' will not necessarily debar you from entry into the Armed Forces. But also remember, any undisclosed convictions may make you liable to prosecution.

Ar and one more question i have av bin on the site there and it says in the REME so after you pass out on phase 1 training  will you carry out genral soldier duties such as patrols or will you just work on aircraft and just stick to the engineering side of things?

In the Army everyone is a soldier first and tradesman second.

This means basic soldier training, which must be passed, followed by trade training.

Yeah sure, it will no doubt involve on the job training as well.

Obviously you wont be working unsupervised coming straight  from trade training.

I applied for the marines last year(exact same process as the navy), i was abit dubious wether or not to ask but i told them about my convictions...

I asked about convictions based on prison sentences and thats when i found out my fate...

In 2006 i received 32 months custodial which rendered me unable to even get passed the AFCO, as the maximum sentence your allowed to carry is 30 months or less and then the probation period for that was 10 years..

10 years, laughable if you ask me !!!

The annoying thing is the time they can allow it to be called SPENT in the armed forces are wrong in my opinion, anywhere on the outside world is like 5 years give or take, but in the armed forces its like 8 years maybe more according to the officer that passed his wisdom onto me :(

Another thing you might want to consider is the time that you committed these crimes, as the probation periods are pretty strict, even if you didn't end up in prison..or you got a fine/community service/probation and completed it, i think the shortest probation period they allow for you to apply is something like 2/3 years...

Like i said i'm basing this on what i was told by the recruiting guy in the AFCO...each person may be different !! He also told me the RAF/Navy/Marines/Army all use the same recruiting criteria which is a load of twaddle aswell...me personally, i didn't think he liked the look of me because i dont look like the kinda guy that can be easily pushed over or be spoken to like ur a complete and utter plank with no worth !!! or maybe it was because i turned up in my work overalls and everyone in there was about 16-18 in jeans/shirts/suits LOL :)

Good luck anyhow

I'll probably apply for the Army after xmas but we shall see...

on the other hand, maybe the recruiting officer picked up on what you thought of him?

With all respect Mr BoomBastic there are ques of people wanting to join the Forces that dont have a criminal record. Be it right or wrong, who would you prefer to employ?

I can understand you being upset by the rules and regulations set by the MOD regarding people with criminal records as opposed to those on the "outside world" but I dare say they have their reasons!

As for you making a bad impression when you turned up in overalls I wouldnt say that was the case!

As for being spoken too as if you were an utter plank with no worth, well you better get used to it, thats the way you will get treated in Basic Training!

A strong character who isnt easily pushed over is a good thing int he Armed Forces, it shows strength of character  but at the same time you need to know your place in the pecking order and be ready to take a lot of s**t, like Dreme says its part of Military life, especially in Basic training but it can carry on after that as well.

Given that the guys in the AFCO are the guys who sing you off saying you are fit to serve and ready to start your career unfortunately if he's said no then its probably going to be a no, your only other option is to visit another AFCO, and see what they say but I wouldnt hold your breath and I'd stand by if the first recruiter found out.

Alright mate,

I couldn't tell you how gunner life is treating me seeing as im not a gunner lol, I work in comms mate but life is good mate, getting posted in a few weeks then off to sunneir climbs in a few month.

If you're unsure what your next step is the best thing to do every time is to make a phone call or pay a visit to your local AFCO and explain your situation. Personally I'd stick on a shirt n tie and pay a visit, much better to gauge a propper picture for both parties.

Dont get me wrong dreme, when your in training i could understand being spoken to in a manner that you normally wouldnt except on the streets or outside world...

I just didnt like the way he put himself across, didnt seem helpful one bit when i asked him questions and was sat there doing all over things except informing me about the do's n donts like...

Anyhow i took myself down today to the AFCO and asked the army recruitng officer...absolute beltin gent...told him about my convictions and my criminal background, couldnt have been more polite or helpful...

He said take a form (which he gave me) to the police station get your PNC check sent out to you, and we can go from there...which in my eyes seems alot more helpful then being spoken to like dogshit when im simply enquiring :))

He also said if i know people within the army that are ranks then they could possibly act as a sort of referee and give them a judgement on my character even tho my background may make me out to be a complete and utter barstool lol

Lets see what happens in 30 days time..meanwhile i best hit the running machine has i've got 2 stone to lose before i go back haha

I wish you all the very best and hope it works out for you. Would be good for others if you would be so kind as to keep us informed as to your progress.

btw, any idea what you would like to do in the Army?

Dreme,

put it this way....i'd rather employ someone who is good at what they do regardless of history....who would you put your life in the hands of? A 16 year old lad who hasn't even got out of their acne years seen nothing of the world, clean cut and probably been wrapped in wool for 3/4 of their life. Who would probably crumble in fear at the site of blood or a serious accident...or someone that has abit of backbone, nouse, seen more and been through harder times who can hold their own, look after themselves and maybe do a job twice as fast and more effective regardless if they were an ex criminal !!

Your understanding of the armed forces maybe good, but you cant judge people based on the sole purpose that they may have broken the law in their past !!! No-ones perfect.  Everyone can change if they want too...they just have to be given the chance to prove to others they can do it, not to prove critics wrong but to do it for THEMSELVES !!

no problems mate, its just abit of a kick in the teeth when someone can get the wrong end of the stick about ya..

happy days tho :)

Well im not 100% sure what field i might apply for as my age will probably reduce things by a decent margin being 28

More then likely Infantry, or something in that genre...Gunner/Tank driver maybe !!!

I'm not gunna get my hopes up this time, but just wait for my PNC to come back which can take upto 30 days apparently which is abit of a crapper but what the hell lol

What is it you do?

Of course i'll keep people informed as much as i can, ya never know someone else in my situation may stumble across what i find out and help them out also

I agree 100% with you, I would want someone I can trust watching my back, regardless if they were an ex-criminal or not!

As for your remark about 16 year olds you cant tar them all with the same brush either. Many soldiers, especially tradesmen, join at 16 or 17, I know as I was one of them! I cant remember anyone complaining when I covered their backs in Northern Ireland, there again I was a very old 18 year old then!!
