This is the place for all RN banter and news. If you're looking for info about joining the Navy please use the 'joining' sections and crack on from there or simply post a question on here and someone should respond.

Some Trivia for those inclinced but don't expect to feel excited if you're an ex-pongo - The only surviving Union Jack from the Battle of Trafalgar has been found in a drawer would you believe it. It was flown from HMS Spartiate, one of Nelson's warships, in the defeat of the Frog navy 204 years ago this month. The flag was made from bunting by the crew for Lieutenant James Clephan, a popular Scottish officer who was one of the few to have risen from the ranks.

The 11ft x 7ft flag, riddled with holes made by shot and shell splinters, will be auctioned in London on Trafalgar Day, 21 October. Will fetch a tidy sum me thinks. £10,000+

THE Princess Royal yesterday joined survivors of one of the great naval disasters of the Second World War.

They layed wreaths for the 800 or so men who died after torpedoes from a German U-boat sank HMS Royal Oak in Scapa Flow, off Orkney. Fewer than 350 men lived through the six-minute attack in October 1939. One of the survivors Bert Pocock, 87, from Reading, said: 'I had to come back. I never stop thinking about the boys still down there.'

RIP

If I had been censured every time I have run my ship, or fleets under my command,
into great danger, I should have long ago been out of the Service and never in the House of Peers.

Ha! Ha! The power of bidding my friend. You were way off the mark. Hope you didn't make a little tipple on that?

The Only surviving Battle of Trafalgar Flag eventually sold for £384000, check it out in  The Telegraph.co.uk

Do you think the Royal Navy should allow those who apply for Redundancy to go in priority to those who don't apply? Or should the Navy use redundancy as a means to weed out the less able / unemployable to make the Navy more efficient?

It takes three years to build a ship, three hundred to build a tradition.

Can I say yes to both? If someone wants to leave....might as well let them go.....but also weed out the rubbish too.....sorry.....I don't know anything about these processes.! My experience from the NHS is that they haven't let anyone coming up to retirement get redundancy...for obvious reasons.......and if the job is not easily filled...they say no too.Unfortunately, it seems to be the good ones who leave/get redundancy because they are so disillusioned...then your left with the dross! Don't know what the answer is!

Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.

That is so true NG! If someone wants to leave and can get redundancy then good luck to 'em I say. But it is more likely that the more incompetent peeps will reject redundancy. As in most jobs getting rid of certain people is very difficult
