Poll: Should we send a Royal Navy ship or Sub to the Falklands as a gesture of intent?

Posted about 1 year ago FALKLAND ISLANDS Ministry of Defence steps up surveillance of Argentinian navy as tensions escalate over black gold in the Falkland Islands. The Argies have also tried to blokade British registered ships from delivering oil rig equipment to the Islands, defying the International trade exclusion zone agreed upon after the '82 war. How will this row pan out and will the Argies ever give up their expansionist claims to foreign territory? Cooperation destroys Confrontation |

| Posted about 1 year ago There are already rumours flying about that there are a couple of ships on the way down there, the MOD has denied this, who do we believe? I believe the MOD at the moment as the rumours are being circulated by The Sun newspaper! lol

| Posted about 1 year ago I was under the impression we had a small navy presence (around 2 ships) down there already as well as a sqdrn of tornado's/typhoons and some army? Has the situation escalated that muhc or is it just the argie bargie's doing their usual moaning like a child without a sweet and the media blowing it up? Never give up, never quit, if you havent bled you haven't earnt it. |

We still have some excellent soldiers. The problem is getting them there. So what should we do? Well, in honour of the 258 brave men who gave their lives in 1982 and to support the proudly British Falkland Islanders, it is essential that we do something. What we're seeing may just be a bit of sabre-rattling, an attempt by Argentine President de Kirchner to distract the electorate from her own problems. Cooperation destroys Confrontation |

| Posted about 1 year ago I don't think a sub or for that matter anymore forces should be sent to the region - to my knowledge the navy already has a frigate down their on exercise anyway. This doesn't mean that forces should not be made ready, i'd think that it would be easily achievable to get a sufficient force to be put on 24hrs notice to move. However the direct movement of armed force into the region, in my opinion, will only worsen the situation and put the UK at greater risk of entering armed conflict. Please call me TOM !!! Got to disagree there big fella.
Firstly 24 hours notice to move is all fine and well, i can assure you we have RQA forces ready to move much sooner than that, I think what you mean is 24 hours to get there if it kicks off. That's not likely when it comes to naval forces, would take approx 3 days to get there. Secondly there is already an armed forces presence in the area as it stands, in referenvce to an earlier post there's been plans to send typhoon's to the falklands for a while to replace the tornado's. Maybe its coincidental timing, maybe its a show of force, or maybe its a bit of both. I can assure you if we did send extra forces down there it would not make us the antagonist, the falklands are ours, the islanders are british and they want us there, they're our people. Someone starts pushing your mate around, by clenching your fist are you the antagonist? If the argie bargie's did fancy a pop they''d have a job, part of my job is radar's and I promise you with the type of systems we have down there we'd see them comming a mile off, or a few hundred mile off... nuff said on that. Can someoe brifly fill me in on all of this? I've had a hectic week at work so I havewnt kept up with the news, last I heard we want to probe for oil around the islands and the Argie's dont like it? Whats happened since then to kick talk off of military action? Never give up, never quit, if you havent bled you haven't earnt it. |

Some very fair points - and with regard to the 24hrs notice i meant like you said to be down their, but i was mean land forces, as I'm aware naval assets would take a while longer to get down their. However i do think that the placment of more force in the region, however we the brits may view it, the rest of the world may see it as a move to force the argentinians into conflict. As for why all the talk of military action i think its a mix of the press and politicians - http://www.hmforces.co.uk/news/articles/2148-argentine-anger-as-british-oil-rig-moves-in-today-and-mod-increases-forces - "Gordon Brown responded to Argentinian sabre-rattling by insisting yesterday that the UK had made ‘all the preparations that are necessary’ to protect the territory, which has a population of 3,000. But Shadow Foreign Secretary William Hague said the Royal Navy’s presence in the region should be increased further to act as a deterrent." but i think the talk of war - but please don't quote me on this - is due to the Argie's demanding permits for some of the ships that are aiding the exploration, Or at least that's how i understand it. I hope so mate, cos I cant see us getting enough troops together without making cut-backs elsewhere. Plus we all know what they are like when oil is involved, they will be straight in there!

Now now guys..take a wee look at the Argintine Forces...they have not had hardly any new kit or combat experience since 1982.... the UK forces on the otherhand....... The Tech on the Typhoon alone would scare the arse of of their Airforce......
And the idea the Yanks would not support us is mad......look at Afghan right now, we leg it they have a wee bit of bother eh ?

| Posted about 1 year ago I was looking at that same page earlier today, made me chuckle that some of their kit is before my dads time! Their infantry weapons are getting on now as well. In terms of our kit, I'd take a few off the numbers ofd the Tornado F3's and add a few to the typhoons. We've dismantled a fair few tornado's as they're being replaced by the typhoons. Don't forget Globe masters, its a good peice of kit, even if it is american, I wouldn;t be suprised if we have an E3D (AWAC) near by these days to keep an eye on stuff. They can't sneeze without us knowing about it. Never give up, never quit, if you havent bled you haven't earnt it. |

Yesterday the MoD denied the Royal Navy had increased its presence in the South Atlantic. But four vessels - HMS York, the survey ship HMS Scott, the Falklands patrol vessel HMS Clyde and the tanker RFA Wave Ruler - are close to the territory. A military source said top brass had ordered four Eurofighter Typhoon fighters, which carry 1,000lb laser-guided missiles, to fly to the south Atlantic, replacing the RAF's ageing Tornado fighters, which cannot carry bombs. Just a coincidence? The MoD said the changeover of planes was routine and not a response to the threats by Argentina.

lol
