Indeed there are misconceptions of ex-military professionals among employers, and many former forces experience this, more so if they come from the ranks.

This follows that former forces have no experience of the commercial world and that their skills are non-transferable. But we all know this is incorrect because many job roles in the forces are the same as administrative roles in government and the public sector thus providing the right skills; then there are procurement and logistical roles that give experience of the commercial world. In addition, many join the forces after having already worked in civilian jobs for either a few or several years.

An employer’s claim that he would rather recruit "ex-drug dealers, convicts and child molesters than ex-military candidates", is misinformed, incorrect, and down right unprofessional.

I agree with Stewart's post but the incident was nothing to do with ability to perform. It was based upon the employer's attitude to what is going on in Afghanistan and he sees the troops as part of a willing conspiracy. The current disclosures regarding Musa and the other actions in what is known as Danny Boy are examples of his allegations having, unfortunately, some substance. In the main, he is blaming the actors when his real complaint is with the playwright. He should have resisted the temptation to make such a public condemnation.

However, he has done what he has done. The genie will not go back into the bottle.  My own response is to do whatever is necessary to make him suffer for his outburst - he is too ignorant to understand any turning of the cheek. His firm needs to be denied any official work. HMCR should devote extra attention and others, such as PAYE staff, should make sure he is clean as a whistle. He has the right to speak out but must also understand that many will be offended by his attitude and comments. He is being disrespectful to those he claims he would prefer.

I doubt that much will happen. Even if he were to make an apology, I would very much doubt that this were for reasons of decency rather than expediency. The man is a fool and fools surround us. Look at the Government.

I don't agree - Danny Boy has little to do with this. The Iraqis' allegations that British soldiers might have killed some captives held after the Battle are denied by the MoD and will be fought in a courtroom. We have to remember all the positive stories that have come from Irag and Afghanistan, not just the alledged negative ones.

Not all soldiers serve in the frontline and possess and learn skills that support front line soldiers and the entire military infrastructure in a different way. Karl Winn has no idea of what he has said - he is discriminating against former soldiers and if his company is found to be discriminating on these grounds then he should face prosecution as there is little evidence a person serving in the Intelligence or Medical Corps that they have no skills to offer civilian employers.

He's on an ego trip, should be removed from his position, as he certainly hasnt got the personality and professionalism to do the job.

No wonder the Job Agency is in the state that it is in with leadership like this.  If one of his staff had said this, disciplinary action would have been taken.  This person is not worth wasting time talking about - they haven't got a clue about the real world, in company with many of our elected and unelected representatives!

Somebody mentioned that this Job Agency is bringing politics into it - this bloke might not agree with the war and therefore has set an agenda not to hire former Armed Forces. He'll regret making these comments nonetheless, there is a wave of support for the Armed Forces at the moment and most people whom serve are of good conduct and bring valuable skills to an new employer. Why miss out on these?

do the words ' brain dead'  spring to mind -

this bloke is a contender for 'prat of the year '    the fool is too stupid to realise it's our armed forces that gave him the right to be the halfwitted prat he is

just a thought - if his offices get broken into - or he is robbed at home - or mugged in the street - he will not want any ex-serviceman turned policeman to help him as they are such awful people

Hi Pilgrim,

here what a W++k++. I served 26 years in the Army going up thro' the ranks because I studied, you know like you do in any walk of life. I am now retired and when I need a civvy to do something for me I know that, (a) they will be late/not turn up, no idea of good time keeping, (b) Done a 6 month govy learning course to become a fully qualified what not, (c) refere to previous havn't a clue how to do the what not so spouts a load of tosh. The average serviceman is by far better educated regarding skill sets than any civvy that I have come across, Civvies are sloppy they have no pride in either their dress, attitude or profesionalism towards their 'government given' skill. seven years I spent to become an elevtrical engineer reaching a masters degree, when I was demobed I found that my credentials were seen to be irrelevent because I had been a soldier and really did not know one end of a cable drum from a mortar, It did not matter to the morron that I had studied at London Uni on term release from my duties to complete my courses. So this remark from Winn is far from uncommon when it comes to being employed after service.

That sweeping statement about us "civvies" is just as insulting as HIS statement about forces personnel. Just goes to show.........there's good and bad in ALL walks of life!

Really? Well seeing as I have not one sympathetic bone in my body you'll just have to accept that I and many others really don't give a hoot. You might want to consider that more and more it isn't going to be "Tommy this, Tommy that" you civvies have given us. Some of us are sick of being treated like dirt. S

Assuming that's a refernece to the recent incident......... I wouldn't say he was "bad", made a serious mistake, acted extremely rashly if the story he puts forward isn't true...but many a person would have done the same. No excuse for a trained professional........ but, in my book, and I appear not to be alone, he was still harshly treated...given the circumstances
