Posted over 3 years ago Anyone have a strong opion as to the best MBT out there? Is it the Challenger? The US Abrams? From what I've read, both have performed well in Iraq - with only 1 loss in action, which is more than a little amazing.

Posted over 3 years ago Theres a show on the discovery channel called extreme engineering and one day they showed the us abrams and how they repair them. it takes 50 days to competely repair the whole thing and the main culprit of mechanical failure in the middle east for MBT's is sand. it gets inside the tank and sandstorms shred away the paintjob, i guess the us abrams are reeeeeally advanced. i think the challenger is beast.

Posted over 3 years ago For me the Challenger is the better of the two MBT's. Leaving aside any national bias the same show Paul refers to showed the damage to the turbine blades the Abrams suffers from due to sand intake - they call it "Blade Hook" as the turbine blades start looking like scythes. Power packs have to be swapped fairy often to overcome this. And -also again IIRC - a Challenger 1 has the record for the longest distance tank to tank kill during the first Gulf war having hit an Iraqi tank at 5.1 Km

Posted over 3 years ago Wellll - the one thing the Abrams has is sheer speed. I think they limit the tank to 50mph, but without it, it can go about 70mph! Unbelievable.

Posted over 3 years ago You're not wrong Peter! The Challenger 1 was bad enough, I expect 2 is a monster. In GW 2 Challenger 2 was the only tank not to suffer a loss to enemy fire. I think it might be time for the Abrams design to be over-hauled so that it can compete with Alvis Vickers whom claim the modern challenger is the world's most reliable. It takes three years to build a ship, three hundred to build a tradition.

Posted over 3 years ago The Abrams came in to serves in1980and to date has had 2 major upgrades in its life time,so maybe its time the US invested in some new hardware. Charlie 2 is king

Posted over 3 years ago Sorry lads, Challenger is a killer. That Abrams model is prone to constant oil leaks from its engine gaskets unless you wrap it in cotton wool. The Chall is as durable as solid rock. If the Train to Heaven Stops at Bangkok, GET OFF!

Posted over 3 years ago So that's that then is it? Challenger out-perfoms the Abrams in every dept. Well then, what about the JEEP VS LAND ROVER? Both have had their moments in Iraq and Afghanistan but which one edges it? If the Train to Heaven Stops at Bangkok, GET OFF!

Posted over 3 years ago I'll go for the Landrover Not least because I had the dubious joy for working for Ford, who owned J/LR at the time and LandRover got a rather large order from the US Go'vt during GW1 because the landies were going places the US vehicles couldn't.....

Posted over 3 years ago Challenger 2 is the better of the two. In fact its the best in the world. I'm not an ex-tanky, But I know a couple of ex-tankys and they say that the yanks drool over our Challenger and that challenger 2's internal technoligy is in fact a military secret. Whether thats true, I don't know. But it is the best tank in the world and it will be hard to beat!

Posted over 3 years ago Seems to be a toss-up between the Chally II, the Abrams and the Merkava. Horses for courses. MsG Fünf Minuten vor der Zeit ist des Soldaten Pünktlicheit, der Sanitäter kommt zehn Minuten später.

Posted over 3 years ago Who said anything about the Merkava? I thought this was about Challenger2 and Abrams? Anyway the general consensus seems to the the Challenger2 and it's infallable oil leaks. I'm not a teccy but I know the Yanks have used Landrover a lot this past decade. A bit vulnerable to IED's but then so is the jeep. The only preference I have is swatting Muslim extremists...

| Posted over 3 years ago I need to tell you guy's to me a "Tanky" is a person who fetches the victuals out of the fridge in a war ship. A "challenger" is someone trying to nick your girlfriend and an Abram sounds like an obscure religious sect. You see gentlemen in the original or should I say SENIOR SERVICE only matters of the utmost importance are generally debated, like women, beer and spirits, and cigarettes, in as much as whether to smoke before sex, after or during. Then and only then do you discuss friverlous things like gun's and weapon's and the like. A question I would throw at you all if I have your attention is (does that bendy bloke in the fabulouse 4 nead to wear anything "rubber" at any time? and are those Hippo in the co co pops bowls "House trained? Another question, who and where am I ?and what does this ambulance want with me? and get off me and leave......................aloneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.............. All answers to St Blownits Mental Hospital C/o BFPO SHIPS etc etc etc

Posted over 2 years ago Having been a tank crewman i can tell you all that challenger 2 is a fantastic piece of kit and we were the training regiment so we got it first!! Its a pure killing machine but its nothing without the crews that do such a fantastic job of maintaing them and i say that with pride for the man and women of the whole armoured corp so all in all chally 2 all the way!!!!!!!!!!

| Posted over 2 years ago I would argue in terms of combat power they are equal -- hoever too my knowledge the ABRAMS use a british designed armour, therefore it would be nothing without the brits so really challenger all the way simply really its british Please call me TOM !!!
