Wondering how difficult it is to get in?

Posted about 1 year ago Hello,my fiance is wanting to join the RM soon and i was wondering how hard it is to get in? I know that it is one of the hardest personal challanges for someone to achieve out there. I just wondered if anyone can give me some idea of what he might expect, as i really really want him to get in. It is all he has ever wanted to do and he would be gutted not to get in. All the men is his family are service men going back to the Boer Wars and he wants to carry it on. He trains all the time and i think he would make a great marine, but he is just hanging on until the baby is born then is going to apply. I think it would be an amazing experience and a once in a lifetime thing and i really want him to get in and do it. What can he expect mentally? I wonder if they just rip you to shreds and see if you much you can take? Is there anything i can do to help him? Anyway, hope you can help. Thanks.

| Posted about 1 year ago Hi ChloeAnna and welcome. I´m sure bootnecks or another RM will be able to give you some sound advice. You are basically correct in your assumption, they will work and test him hard in training and then they will train him specifically in what he needs to know. You can help him by listening mainly, supporting him whenever he needs it, he will rely on you immensely you can be sure of that! I wish you both all the best!

| Posted about 1 year ago I'm a new boy to this site but regularily use the Royal Marines site forum which has a lot of info on the RM and general life in the corps. But just a few basics, both royal marines selection and training are famously the hardest in the british armed forces (maybe the world) so it is never going to be easy but its for certain not impossible. At the moment I'm in the selection process, medical on monday :D At the moment, depending on which careers office your fiance decides to use he will probably be looking at 4-9 months selection length from handing in his forms to the start of training and in these 9 months support from family and friends will be essential. Throughout training he will have down times and he will feel like rapping but this is when family comes in and just reassures him that it will all be OK and he will get through it. Fitness wise he will have to get himself in good shape, should be able to run 3 miles in sub 21 minutes, 60 press ups, 85 sit ups and 6 pull ups. This will be tested on he's Potential Royal Marines Course. Check out the Royals website though, some really good reading on there. Tell him to crack on with his application. All the best with the little one. Sam |

| Posted about 1 year ago It takes 4 to 9 months to even get started?! Seems like ages....but at least they are still recruiting. Well he will be 25 and he is concerned that he is going to be too old, he said the age limit is 25? I am sure i read it was 33 somewhere, well someone please correct us... Good luck with your med anyway B. |

| Posted about 1 year ago The maximum age at entry to the RMs is as you thought, 33. This might help answer anymore questions you have: http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/royalmarines/

| Posted about 1 year ago Hey Chloeanna! Welcome to the forums. Like Dreme says the Booties aren't my area of expertise but I can offer one peice of advice true of all basic training courses. It's all a big mind game, the trick is to play the game by the rules. The difficulty comes when they change the rules when they fancy. It's designed to wear your down, push you, exhaust you and out you out of your comfort zone. If your fella goes in with an open mind, listens to what is said and does it to the letter while giving maximum effort he shouldn't have any major dramas. Never give up, never quit, if you havent bled you haven't earnt it. |

| Posted about 1 year ago Hey ChloeAnna, Is your fiance still trying to get in? If he is, I wish him all the best. RM basic training is arduous but not impossible. Training is designed to 'weed' out the weaklings (except through injury of course) but if he's a mentally strong guy then he shouldn't have any problems at all. There will be a fair amount of 'beastings', that I can guarantee but it's all about playing the game. As long as he works on the basics like pull-ups, press-ups, sit-ups, lunges and squats for muscular endurance he should be fine. No need to do weight training, just bodyweight circuits. On the cardiovascular side, if he can run 6 miles with ease he should be fit enough. (A 6-minute mile or under would be ideal). Sorry about the late reply. I've only just joined this site. Hopefully this helps. p.s Just in case you're wondering, I am a serving bootneck. |

| Posted about 1 year ago I agree, don't mess with Bootnecks chico, I've worked with them on Ops, shared training courses with them, played drinking games with them, and have lot of good friends amongst them, and still wouldn't dream of slagging them off, and I was a gobby Rockape. |

| Posted about 1 year ago I actully have a very good point; Royal Marines do a specialist job and I don't disrespect them due to 2 family members serve in them and 1 just retired last week! and All 3 of then play a music instrument! since joining them. They do have the award winning and best band! |
