Hey guys.

I am looking into joining the RAF next year as a Weapons Systems Operator.   I am just curious as to what physical requirmets would be expected of me in basic training, and then advanced training.  eg: pressups, situps, running etc.  I would just like to know a benchmark that I need to be able to achieve so I would be more confident in basic training, (should I get into the RAF).

If anyone has any further advice on preperation before OASC, (other than mental preperation for the aptitude tests), it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I know that it can vary, but what is the average length of wait from sending off an application, to getting acknowledgement for it?

Thanks

,- Rob

I going say I hope whitey can answer this as I think he is a WSO (Sorry Dreme Beat you to it)

Also I know my trade may open anytime From Monday - January,   Also Most Armed Forces are sort of waiting until this Review is over in October is then when they have more a time for Recruitment Numbers and etc.

Regarding Fitness I have the booklets,   The running is 1.5miles which done at AFCO center before you go to OASC and for a Male is 12mins 12 secs min with AFCO told me that 10mins is a safe zone,  My Current is around 9.40.

They often quite good at making around a month turnaround I was hearing once your trade is open and etc.

Reply back if you like more info,  I have all the RAF Recruitment information with me btw (this was given to me when I visited AFCO)

Hi ChicoTime.  I am new to this forum stuff.

First of all, thankyou for your information.  It helped a lot.  I can do the 1.5 mile run in just under 11 mins, so I am almost there.  With regards to the pressups and situps... am I assesed by how many I can do in one go, or how many in a minute?  Also, is there any other main type of fitness that I am expected to do, like pullups and the like?

I recently went to my local AFCO and I got a few books about all jobs in the RAF, and just aircrew jobs.  I also recieved a blue sheet telling me the details of the WSO job, however it was rather vague about fitness requirments, (which is why I came here).  Is there anything that you got from your AFCO, which I havent, so I can enquire about it on my next trip there?

Thanks again,

,- Rob

Well,  Coz I knew them there I got more open information.   Also Your at 11mins and that would class as a Pass but maybe not be on the top of the list.   The better your fitness they more quickly the process you.

I got the pack for going to Halton which gives you a Fitness book and etc.   Like I cant remember everything about Sit ups but I don't think they come until your at Halton.   But this could been a pack that they don't have in your AFCO,  I would also say Visit RAF website as that got loads information and all that is More update than what your AFCO have got.

But as you want join Next year 2011/2012 I would say Just keep fit, Go to Gym, Go swimming and just in General keep fit remember don't over exercise also If you keep getting fitter you should be at the standard with out having to add extra hours in and hopefully get in first time round.

They some people like me that needs to get to the standard as We don't really know when our trades open and don't want fail Pre Joining Fitness Test.

Hi Rob, welcome to the forums!

First things first Chico has it a little confused, im now WSOP or Aircrew, I work in comms in the RAF.

That mile and a half time is fine for basic training but you will want to keep improving your fitness if you want to be aircrew, they have a very high fitness standards. A good target is 10 minutes, very good is around 9 minutes.

You're looking at a good all round fitness standard have a look at this page http://www.raf.mod.uk/careers/lifeintheraf/fitnesschallenge.cfm and view the 'fit for life' guide at bottom of the page.

Sit ups and push ups are measured as as many as you can do in one minute WITHOUT stopping, the standards for a 16-28 year old male are 20 push ups and 35 sit ups but again I would definately aim to double that for Aircrew fitness standards, however on your basic training they will also work you up to this, in your basic training you will only be expected to met these basic standards and they will increase once you progress onto aircrew training.

I've never had to do Pullups as part of a fitness standard but it's definately a good part of your fitness as it works arms, back and chest muscles.

The key is dedication and effort, dont let yourself get lazy and keep going when it gets hard, just don't push it too hard and injure yourself.

Lastly of course you can ask the AFCO about fitness standards and what's required, its what they're there for.

Hope this helps,

All the best

Never give up, never quit, if you havent bled you haven't earnt it.
