TA selection weekend

Posted over 2 years ago Hi I am planning on joining the TA and I have my selection weekend on the 14th of March. This has been brought forward a week from when I was originally expecting it. I have had conflicting information on the 1.5 mile run. Some people including TA Staff at TAC have said it is a best effort run with no pass or fail, but others have said that if I can't do it in 14 mins, I won't get in. Does anybody know for definite the 100% truth behind this run? My sporting days are limited to the PE lessons at school over 12 years ago, and a few 5km races that I run/walk in. Am I wasting their time going to selection? Will I fail if I can't do the time? I am female, 28 years old, and joining the Royal Engineers if they say yes. Please help me somebody?! |

Posted over 2 years ago I suspect that if you're not too slow and give 100% then you'll probably be ok. Once you've passed selection there'll be quite a lot of Physical Training so you'll get fitter. Even as an Engineer you'll need to be fit. My advice, if you're worried about your fitness, get into a gym or at least start doing some running. The hardest part about getting through forces training is the fitness, if you can conquer that the rest is easy. If you went for a 1 or 2 mile jog 3 or 4 times a week you'd soon start to notice the difference. Never give in - never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy. - Winston Churchill

Posted over 2 years ago You need to give it 100% and you'll get through! If your attitude for rest of selection is good I cant see there being a problem just dont think you've got half an hour!!!

Posted over 2 years ago Thanks for all your answers. I failed the run, but I have been told I can defer my application for upto 6 months to work on my fitness. They provisionally put me down for another selection weekend in mid April, but as I have had a cold and tonsillitis, I haven't been doing much running in the last week. I did for the first week, ran 1.8-2 miles a day but haven't done that for 5 days now. I'll get there I'm sure of it, just need time.

keep at it, and don't ever go there thinking you will fail! They WANT you in there. EFFORT is what they want - They generally will not fail you on your run time, a mate of mine did hers in over 20mins! if you walk over without a single drop of sweat they will worry though...
Good luck hun. |

Posted over 2 years ago Have decided not to join at the moment. My fitness isn't up to scratch and have decided to try and lose 3 stone first and try again after that. I have also decided not to join that unit as there is bad feeling there after I inadvertently spilt the beans on an inappropriate relationship within the ranks. Now there is bad blood, and I can't trust the people involved to protect and cover me in an Army situation, when I re-enlist, it'll be with another unit.

Posted over 2 years ago Fair enough i can understand your reasons .don't give up though it is a really worthwhile thing to do . on the fitness and weight loss front and being of the more athletic build myself i find that regular long walks is a good way to start a fitness program especially as i hate, HATE running, aim for about 3 miles in an hour about 3 times a week ,this prevents any small injuries and gets your body burning fat when you feel ready you can run sections of the walk until you find you can run the whole way .then all you need to do is increase the distance .Oh if you like your food like me don't diet its depressing when they don't work and most of the food is gash just eat a healthy meal 3 times a day no snacks (okay as a reward maybe) if you keep it up you will notice a difference i normaly drop about a stone over 2 months by doing this if you have heard all this before and are sick of other peoples advice don't worry find what works for you just be carefull of injuries having 6 weeks rest because you have knackered something is why people normally give up Zen and the art of motorcycle maintainance ...... lets ride

Posted over 2 years ago I spoke to a new unit today, have decided to join the TA in January next year. I was advised to go along to their unit and see what it is like, which I probably will, but I want to get my fitness levels sorted first, then I have done it for me at my pace, and not cos some top brass has his pace stick up my backside - (as was the case at Swynnerton back in Feb!)

Posted over 2 years ago At Swynnerton, we had breakfast then went on a long walk to the woods to learn how to fire the weapons. We saw how the machinery works - necessary for the Engineers regt - we should have gone on a simulated shooting thing but didn't. We had to cam up and learn how to pitch shelters in the forest and do a team building exercise. You will get dirty despite the overalls they give you. You sleep in a block with other girls, or in a room on your own if you are only female recruit that weekend. Toilets are not always in same place, I had to walk to other end of block for showers and toilets. It was a good weekend and you get to meet some important people in the regt ie Major Brown was there. There wasn't anything so strenuous a girl couldn't do it, and that is despite being overweight and unfit! You finish the weekend off with the 1.5 mile run, and trust me, you have to pass it otherwise you get deferred! Good Luck, let us know how you got on!

Posted over 2 years ago Hi Guys / Gals I'm really worried about my 1.5 mile run, I've got it on Saturday the Jan 9th 2010 in Exeter. Is the 800m warm up a jog or run? I'm also worried about the pull ups and the press ups, and I think we have to carry a Jerry can in each hand and walk at the PTI Pace? Wish me luck....
