The Royal Marines

The Royal Marines

Former WO1(GSM) Peter Padley MBE

The Corps of Royal Marines can trace its history back to 1664. They were the first unit of English Naval Infantry and were originally named the Duke of York and Albany’s Maritime Regiment of Foot.

They were subsequently known as the Admiral’s Regiment. In 1855 they were re-named the Royal Marines Light Infantry and in 1862 were again re-titled the Royal Marine Light Infantry. It was not until amalgamations in 1923 that the Corps of Royal Marines were formally established.

The Royal Marines have fought with distinction throughout the ages, especially so in WWII where they fought alongside Army Commandos in all areas of operations. In 1946 the Army Commandos were disbanded, leaving the Royal Marines to continue the Commando role. There are still Army elements serving with the Royal Marines in a supporting role.

All personnel, with very few exceptions, have completed either the Commando Course at the Commando Training Centre, Lympstone or for Army ranks, the All Arms Commando Course.

Completion of either of these courses entitles the individual to wear the coveted Green Beret. Over the years the Royal Marines have seen active service both at sea and on land, as is signified by their motto ‘Per Mare Per Terram’ (By Sea By Land).

Re: "All personnel, with very few exceptions, have completed either the Commando Course at the Commando Training Centre, Lympstone or for Army ranks, the All Arms Commando Course..... Completion of either of these courses entitles the individual to wear the coveted Green Beret."
All commando training, regardless of whether it is for the Royal Marines, Royal Navy, Army, Royal Marines Reserve or the Territorial Army, is done at CTCRM, Lympstone. All personnel complete the same level and content of commando training. The only differentiation is that personel that are other than recruits of the regular RM, complete the All Arms Commando Course (AACC) or the Reserve Forces Commando Course (RFCC), both of which are run by the Commando Training Wing (CTW) at CTCRM. All graduates of commando training are awarded the same Green Beret and serve respectively as an element of 3 Commando Brigade RM.
