Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME)
Former WO1(GSM) Peter Padley MBE
REME was formed in 1942 in response to the difficulties in maintaining and servicing the increasingly technological weapons and kit in the Second World War.
REME is responsible for the serviceability of equipment ranging from small arms and wheeled vehicles to helicopters and main battle tanks.
REME
All Regiments and Battalions have their own REME support structure. The size of the repair organisation will depend on the size of the unit and its role. This could mean a small unit having only a few REME tradesmen whereas, for instance, an Artillery Regiment may well have a dedicated Regimental Workshop of over 200 tradesmen.
In war, REME is responsible for the recovery and repair of battle damaged and unserviceable equipment. REME personnel are soldiers first and tradesmen second!

REME - expected to be everywhere all the time. Without them a unit is going nowhere - they're in the Infantry, Armoured Corps, Paras, Cdo's, SF etc etc. They even get sent to work away from trade. It's a grand life in REME with loads of variety.
