Regiments and Corps of the British Army

The British Army

The British Army has a long and distinguished history, not to mention a very complicated hierarchy for the Regiments and Corps. This section summarises the history and the functions of the different aspects of the modern British Army.

Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment

Combat Arms

Combat Arms are those who close with, assault and defeat the enemy.

Royal Armoured Corps

Infantry
The Guards Division
Line Infantry and Rifles
The Royal Regiment of Scotland
The Kings Division
The Queens Division
The Prince of Wales Division
The Parachute Regiment
The Brigade of Gurkhas
The Rifles

Special Forces
Army Air Corps

Combat Support Arms

Combat Support Arms are those Regiments and Corps who give support to the Combat Arms in assisting them in engaging and defeating the enemy.

The Royal Regiment of Artillery
Corps of Royal Engineers
Royal Corps of Signals
Intelligence Corps

Combat Services

The Combat Services Corps provide the support required to ensure the Combat and Combat Support Arms are capable of fulfilling their role on operations. However, those serving with Combat Services Corps will be found working within Combat and Combat Support Arms units both on operations and in peacetime. These same specialists are to be found working amongst Special Forces, having completed the arduous training required to serve with such units so they can be an integral part of it, but performing their technical role(s) to the benefit of the unit concerned.

Royal Army Chaplains Department
Royal Logistic Corps
Army Medical Services
Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers
Adjutant General’s Corps
Small Arms School Corps
Army Physical Training Corps
Corps of Army Music

Next Section: RAF Squadrons and Regiments

51st Highland, 7th Bn The Royal Regiment of Scotland (7 SCOTS) The Battalion is part of the Territorial Army that is descended from the ‘Fighting 51st’ Highland Division that fought in both World Wars. Soldiers of The 51st Highland Division earned the German nickname of ‘The Ladies from Hell’ because of the fearless manner they went to war dressed in kilts. The Division was also placed on the ‘Most Feared’ list of the German High Command! The Regiment is employed in the Light Role specialising in anti-tank missile systems, mortars and machine guns as well as the normal infantry tactics expected of an Infantry Regiment. The Regiment recruits from the Highlands of Scotland.
